For Citizens

Thank you for your interest  in participating with "Bridging Generations," a time capsule project for Neenah.

Why is the idea of time travel so appealing? Do you ever wish that you could go back in time to really get a sense of what it was like to live long ago? Would you like to give the future citizens of Neenah a chance to do just that?

Then, join us to create Bridging Generations -Neenah’s Community Time Capsule. It’s a chance for us, the citizens of Neenah in 2012, to preserve a message for the future. What do we care about? What do we value? How do we live here in Neenah in 2012? Someday future citizens of Neenah will know us because we told them. It’s our chance to share our story. Join us.

Please watch the promotional video created especially for Neenah’s school children,
(www.bridginggenerationsneenah.blogspot.com/p/for-schools.html ), and you will get a sense of what we hope to accomplish.

We hope you will join us in this collective effort to preserve our stories to share; not just for now, but for the future citizens of Neenah. Tell them something about you and your life…they’ll be glad you did.

Everyone has a Story to Share!

Citizens are encouraged to submit their original work to the Neenah Time Capsule Project. Submissions can be dropped off at the Neenah Parks and Recreation Department in City Hall or mailed to them via:

Attn: Bridging Generations Time Capsule
Neenah Parks and Recreation Department
211 Walnut Street
Neenah WI 54956.

The deadline for submission for an item to be included is July 31, 2012. The Bridging Generations committee reserves the right to select the submissions that will be included in the time capsule. Citizens will be asked to sign a waiver allowing the committee to use a submission for display in the community and in the time capsule. There are many creative ways to share your story; however, it must be relevant to experiences within the City of Neenah. Click here to access the waiver that must be completed and included with each submission.

In the event a citizen’s submission is not selected for inclusion in the capsule, their work may be displayed throughout the Neenah community.  Possible display locations within our community include schools, the public library, local museums, the historical society, city hall, local restaurants and businesses, and other public buildings.

What is Your Story?

Thirty years (one generation) from now people opening the time capsule will want to learn about what living in Neenah was like in 2012.  We would like you to share your story. Use either or both of these prompts to convey your message.  A narrative of your experiences could be submitted alone or you may add to your submission by including an interpretation of your experiences.

1. Think about your life in Neenah.  Think about a memorable activity or event that you experienced in Neenah.  Perhaps you have favorite traditions with family or friends. Please consider sharing your life experiences.

Ideas: a typical day in your life, a special event you participated in, or any other life experience you want to share.

2.What does living in Neenah mean to you?  How has living in Neenah influenced who you are today?  Think of the positives and negatives of living in Neenah.  What do you especially like about living in Neenah? What, if anything, would you change about our community? If you have lived in Neenah for a considerable length of time, what has changed for you over the years? What are your hopes for Neenah’s future?

How will you Share Your Story?

-personal narrative (essay)
-poetry
-letters, journal entries
-blog entry
-artifact (examples such as ticket stub, program, rock, key, piece of clothing) with a written description of why you believe it should be included in the time capsule
-drawings/sketches - include a written description of each drawing or sketch, and why you believe it is relevant to this project
-artwork such as a small mural, poster, or painting- include a written paragraph with artwork to explain the scene and why it is important to you and this project
-photo essay/ photo collage- include written explanation of relevance of photos to you and this project
-video tape, iMovie, podcast- while these technology options will likely not be selected for inclusion in the time capsule due to technological obsolescence and/or media degradation, they could be posted on our blog or presented at different venues throughout the Neenah community to promote the time capsule project

  1. As a former citizen of Neenah, I find this whole project very intriguing. The idea of "time travel" has always been fascinating to me and I am looking forward to submitting my reflections on my hometown from the perspective of an "alum"!Kudos to the project organizers!
